Blog Action Day 2008- Poverty

Published by gibbsfan19 under non-sci-fi Edit This

Poverty is an issue that not only affects the United States, but the entire world, especially third world countries like Africa, you can see some statistics at:http://www.npc.umich.edu/poverty/#5

The above is only in regard to poverty in the United States.

Excerpt/paragraph from Wikipedia about aiding poverty

Development aid

Most developed nations give development aid to developing countries. The UN target for development aid is 0.7% of GDP; currently only a few nations achieve this. Some think tanks and NGOs have argued, however, that Western monetary aid often only serves to increase poverty and social inequality, either because it is conditioned with the implementation of harmful economic policies in the recipient countries [112], or because it’s tied with the importing of products from the donor country over cheaper alternatives,[113] or because foreign aid is seen to be serving the interests of the donor more than the recipient.[114] Critics also argue that some of the foreign aid is stolen by corrupt governments and officials, and that higher aid levels erode the quality of governance. Policy becomes much more oriented toward what will get more aid money than it does towards meeting the needs of the people.[115] Victor Bout, one of the worlds most notorious arms dealers, told the New York Times how he saw firsthand in Angola, Congo and elsewhere “how Western donations to impoverished countries lead to the destruction of social and ecological balance, mutual resentment and eventually war.”[116] “Once countries give money, they control you.” he says.

Supporters argue that these problems may be solved with better auditing of how the aid is used.[115] Aid from non-governmental organizations may be more effective than governmental aid; this may be because it is better at reaching the poor and better controlled at the grassroots level.[117] As a point of comparison, the annual world military spending is over $1 trillion.[118]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty#Direct_aid

Aid that is contingent on economic policy or in exchange for anything else will NOT work. I believe in order to end poverty we must give the aid with no strings attached and we have to makesure it goes directly into the hands of the impoverished.

There are things we can do to help:

< Food Drives

< Donate to reputable charities/organizations(UNICEF, etc)

< ebay Auctions- You can configure your ebay listings to take a percentage of your total sale price and donate it to a charity of your choice

<REMEMBER TO CHOOSE THE CHARITIES CAREFULLY>

Take a look @

I have an idea in my head recently that if the world annually gave 1% of its taxes collected to fighting hunger we’d see an end to poverty, I can’t say whether or not this is a feasible arrangement, but maybe…

Kentucky Fried Chicken and others are doing their part ————-> http://www.fromhungertohope.com/about/

Be a part of the movement, do something, no matter how small, we can end World Hunger by achieving an Universal  Participation!

Courtroom Shows

Published by gibbsfan19 under non-sci-fi Edit This

Youtube is a great place to find these! In the past few days I have watched several cases. I have seen The People’s Court, Judge Judy, and Judge Mathis…. You’ll see a lot of senseless people in the cases. You’ll see sensible folk too, but they are not as prevalent…. You’ll also see judges perhaps (some(several actually) of the parties in the cases are jerks though)) over react like in the above. Interestingly, thanks to Wikipedia(which is great) I figured out that technically the “Judges” are Arbiters:

“It should be noted that although the show refers to Sheindlin as a judge, neither she nor Petri Hawkins-Byrd is acting as an actual court officer on the show. She is acting as an arbiter, and Byrd is acting as a private security guard.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judge_Judy

Arbitration is:

“Arbitration, a form of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) is a legal technique for the resolution of disputes outside the courts, wherein the parties to a dispute refer it to one or more persons (the “arbitrators”, “arbiters” or “arbitral tribunal“), by whose decision (the “award“) they agree to be bound. Arbitration in the United States and in other countries often includes alternative dispute resolution (ADR), a category that more commonly refers to mediation (a form of settlement negotiation facilitated by a neutral third party). It is more helpful, however, simply to classify arbitration as a form of binding dispute resolution, equivalent to litigation in the courts, and entirely distinct from the various forms of non-binding dispute resolution, such as negotiation, mediation, or non-binding determinations by experts. Arbitration is, today, most commonly used for the resolution of commercial disputes, particularly in the context of international commercial transactions.

Arbitration can be either voluntary or mandatory and can be either binding or non-binding.”

Stargate Fan Pet Peeve

I hate it when Stargate fans irreverently attack the episodes or the movies. Stargate Continuum came out Tuesday and on message boards I have seen attacks. I know that with anything there are going to be people that don’t like it, but as fans I don’t think it is right to call it “a piece of crap” or similar phrases that convey sheer suckdom…. I will show you something, this is a post I wrote (agentCarterfanboy) in a thread I started after Stargate: The Ark of Truth was released, on the GateWorld forum. The thread was called “please don’t bash ark of truth”.

please don’t bash Ark of Truth

“It was better than the episodes, the special effects and picture quality are great! The story was engaging, yes there were plotholes and things that could have been more explained like the “truth” in the ark. The BB scene was a bit long…. but hey, Its still Stargate. As fans we should support it, when we’re devoted to something we shouldn’t toss it aside if it is having a bad day. If we weren’t impressed we should still buy it in the hope that MGM makes more and better ones. Sure some seasons aren’t to everyones liking, but don’t forget that TPTB brought us many great seasons, this why I don’t think its fair to call it a piece of “crap” or a “rip-off” as I’ve seen. I enjoyed watching all of them, including the movie.”That’s it in a nutshell. Interestingly, it got locked.

Do you feel as I do about your shows?

Another Favorite Actress: Emily Deschanel

She is the sister of Zooey Deschanel. Emily, I believe is most known for her role on Bones as forensic anthropologist Doctor Temperance Brennan, who is based on Dr. Kathy Reichs. Emily is also co-producer of Bones.  Bones being one of my favorite shows and Emily being so comely makes her one of my favorites. She often times to me looks to be a red-head(look below to see what I mean) even as I just realized that she is more often brunette.

Bones will return in September. Emily’s recent projects besides Bones include:

  1. Glory Road (2006) …. Mary Haskins
  2. That Night (2005) …. Annie
  3. Mute (2005) …. Claire
